Built for the rush

Fast when the queue is long. Safe when the internet is slow.

Rush Mode is the quick way to ring up an order at the counter. RushSafe is how the Android app keeps an order on the counter’s device when the internet slows.

The Android app is for Android tablets and phones from Android 12. It is being rolled out to cafés in the founding group, so there is no download link yet. RushSafe is being introduced with the Android app.

Rush Mode

One order, from the first tap to the kitchen.

Four screens, the same on an Android tablet and an Android phone. The pictures are drawn from the app’s screens, with sample data.

Ring it up in Rush Mode

The counter is a grid of big tiles with the price on each. Nothing moves while you serve.

  • Large tiles and buttons, made for a thumb in a hurry.
  • Your favourites are in menu order. Positions stay fixed during service, so muscle memory works.
  • A plain dish adds with one tap. A dish with options says “Options” and opens the item sheet.
  • Recent items on this device are one tap away.
  1. Tiles stay putYour favourites, in menu order, in the same place all service.
  2. Price on every tileWith the veg mark, in big figures.
  3. The + adds itA plain dish in one tap. Options open the item sheet.
  4. Send to kitchenAlways at the bottom, with the total.

Rush Mode on an Android phone. Drawn from the app’s screens, with sample data.

The item sheet, only when a dish has options

Add-ons and milk, the quantity and a note for the kitchen, on one sheet. The price updates as you choose.

  • Each option shows what it adds to the price.
  • A note for the kitchen, like “less ice”, travels with the line.
  • The button says exactly what you will add, with the total.

Cart, then Send to kitchen

Check the lines, then one big button. Payment is a separate step on the same order.

  • Options and notes show on every line.
  • Send to kitchen is the biggest thing on the screen.
  • Take the next guest while the first one is cooking.

The cart. Drawn from the app’s screens, with sample data.

The kitchen sees it

The ticket shows the dishes, the options and the note, with how long it has waited. The cook taps Mark ready.

  • New and Ready lanes, with the wait time on each ticket.
  • Options and notes are written on the ticket.
  • The counter sees Ready and taps Handed over.

How many taps is an order? A plain order is the dishes you tap, then Send to kitchen. We have not timed it in a working café yet, so we do not quote a number.

RushSafe

When the internet slows, the order is saved on the counter.

When the internet slows, the order is saved on the counter and sent when it returns. Bills and payments still need the internet. RushSafe is being introduced with the Android app.

  1. 01

    The internet slows or stops

A banner says so in plain words: “No internet. Orders are safe on this counter.”

  2. 02

The order is saved on the counter

Open an order, add or change items, send to kitchen or cancel. Each is written to the device’s own journal first.

  3. 03

The Sync queue shows what is waiting

Every saved order is listed as Waiting to sync, with its items and amount.

  4. 04

It goes out when the internet is back

Automatically, or tap Retry now. Each order has its own ID, so a retry does not make a second order.

Order saved. Drawn from the app’s screens, with sample data.

The Sync queue. Drawn from the app’s screens, with sample data.

The counter only says what is true.

There is no green tick for an order until our server has it. Saved on the device is not the same as received by the kitchen, and the screen never pretends it is.

  1. Saved on this counterThe order is in the counter’s journal. Nothing has reached the cloud or the kitchen yet.
  2. Waiting to syncIt is in the Sync queue. It goes out by itself when the internet returns, or when you tap Retry now.
  3. With the cloudOur server has it. The kitchen sees the ticket from here on, not before.
Straight talk

What RushSafe does and does not do

Short and plain, so you know before you rely on it.

What it does

  • Saves orders on the counter’s own device: open an order, add or edit items, send to kitchen, and cancel.
  • Shows a clear banner when the internet is slow or gone, and a Sync queue of what is waiting.
  • Sends what it saved when the internet returns, by itself or with Retry now.
  • Says what is true at each step: Saved on this counter, Waiting to sync, With the cloud.

What it does not do

  • It does not bill offline. Bills and payments need the internet.
  • It does not tell you the kitchen received or printed a ticket while you are offline. The kitchen sees a ticket only after it reaches the cloud.
  • It is not part of the Chrome web app. The web app needs the internet.
  • It does not make the internet faster, and it cannot move a saved order to another device. The order stays on that device until it is sent.

Nivala needs the internet to bill. A sale counts only when our server confirms it, so nothing is billed twice. RushSafe protects the order, not the payment.
